In Gratitude and Reflection
Thank you for being a part of our legal community, supporting our projects, and attending our MCBA programs and events. Many of you have contributed your time for mediations, arbitrations and settlement conferences. For this, we offer our heartfelt gratitude for building a more healthy and stronger community to those less privileged and able. To our sponsors – we thank you. Your generous support gives us the resources to expand our community outreach and educational programs. May collegiality, patience, and empathy continue in the wake of challenges. A joyful New Year to all! – Mee Mee and Kathie

Get Right with the LucasFilm Legal Force: Entertainment, Intellectual Property and Employment Law
What is it like to practice law “a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away?” Our guest Rhonda Hjort, Deputy Chief Counsel at Lucasfilm, will discuss what it's like to work in the General Counsel’s office of Marin’s most famous business. Rhonda Hjort’s key position with each Lucasfilm entity has demanded a rigorous global trotting schedule to protect Lucasfilm and its creative projects. Entertainment, employment, intellectual property are all handled through the Lucasfilm legal department, directly and sometimes in cooperation with outside counsel. Rhonda will also discuss the recent marriage between Lucasfilm and Disney.

This event is a unique opportunity to get a look inside the Lucas empire. The program will offer content for all practicing lawyers, regardless of your interest or area of practice. Please join us and bring your colleagues for an insightful program on strategic responses to some of Lucasfilm's legal challenges - protecting against hackers, foreign and domestic extortion, and a class action lawsuit claiming illegal wage fixing. Learn what Rhonda expects from her outside counsel.

California's rule against employer-imposed waivers of representative private-attorney-general claims is here to stay
By Gordon W. Renneisen
California is in the midst of a long-running battle over the enforceability of representative-action waivers in employment contracts. While this battle has not been fully resolved, recent case law indicates that representative private-attorney-general actions will not soon be eliminated by waivers in employer-imposed arbitration agreements.  More >

Unlawful detainer mandatory settlement conferences need attorneys
By Hon. Paul Haakenson, Supervising Judge Civil Division, Hon. Geoffrey Howard, Hon. Roy Chernus, and Nancy Murphy, Legal Aid of Marin Pro Bono Manager
In 2012, Legal Aid of Marin (“LAM”) and the Marin Superior Court began the Unlawful Detainer Mandatory Settlement Conference. This collaborative effort has been extremely successful with many benefits for tenants, landlords and the Court. The vast majority of cases in which both sides appear are settled before trial. As we all know, the Bay Area is facing more housing issues, and Marin County is no exception. Our eviction settlement calendar has been growing longer each month, and is assisting in more cases than ever before.  More >
