Growing like weeds: What you need to know about expanding cannabis laws

Learn what is happening around cannabis federal policies, state laws, banking and taxes that will affect law practices servicing clients in the cannabis industry.

Program attendees will learn about 2018 marijuana laws impacting recreational and medical use. Discussion will cover topics ranging from criminality issues under federal law, the status of dispensaries, licensing issues, the political and regulatory climate, what is “track and trade” and how to advise clients on following the guidelines on origin tracking. Legal professionals will be advised about exposure as “conspirators” to a federal criminal enterprise.

Attendees will garner a topical overview of statewide and local cannabis laws and the changes effective 2018. Q & A session to follow the update.

Habib Bentaleb. Esq.

Habib’s practice centers on litigation and advising clients in the cannabis industry. He spent six years as an attorney for the City of Chicago, and was also an executive committee member for the Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) initiative: a collaboration of federal, state, local authorities and community groups whose goal is to reduce gun and gang activity in Chicago. Habib’s previous legal work with government entities provides him with a unique insight as to the types of activities that would likely trigger an investigation. He draws upon this knowledge to advise his clients and secure the future of their businesses.

Lauren Vazquez, Esq.

Lauren Vazquez is a cannabis business attorney and social entrepreneur who has worked for over a decade to end cannabis prohibition and advance alternatives to the failed war on drugs. Lauren has practiced cannabis business law since 2009 and entered private practice in 2011. She has advised numerous cannabis companies and organizations. Lauren is a Professor at Oaksterdam University and previously served as the National Deputy Director of Communications for the Marijuana Policy Project. In 2016, Lauren was a Senior Advisor and statewide leader of the successful Prop 64 Campaign that legalized cannabis in California.
