Professionals:
Legal Secretaries, Inc. (LSI) offers you the opportunity
to encourage and support professionalism among your legal
staff. These changing times demand a commitment by all of
us in the legal field to achieve the highest degree of excellence
in every phase of professional growth. No one is more aware
of the pace of change and demands of the workplace than the
legal secretary, and LSI answers the challenge.
LSI and the local associations sponsor educational seminars
throughout the year, in addition to quarterly conferences,
which are designed to keep the conscientious legal secretary
up-to-date on changes in the law and procedures. Monthly bulletins
and LSI's magazine, The Legal Secretary, provide educational
materials as well. LSI publishes the Law Office Procedures
Manual and the Legal Professionals Handbook through the Rutter
Group, both of which have become indispensable tools in my
office.
LSI offers section memberships in the areas of criminal
law, family law, law office administration, litigation, probate/estate
planning, and transactional law. Besides the seminars and
newsletters offered in these areas, membership rosters give
us the ability to contact another legal secretary who is familiar
with the local rules of Los Angeles County, for example. When
you need a quick answer, this access can be priceless.
LSI sponsors a proficiency examination (CCLS), testing a
legal secretary's skills in seven areas: Ability to Communicate
Effectively, Bookkeeping and Record keeping, Reasoning and
Ethics, Legal Terminology, Law Office Administration, and
California Procedure and Skills in family law, probate, real
estate, corporate law and general litigation. This all-day
exam for certification is given twice yearly.
Members of LSI may take advantage of life, health and dental
insurance, retirement and disability plans, credit union membership,
discounts at car rental agencies, Disneyland, and more. Our
bulletins announce job openings and this referral service
is absolutely free. We also have the benefit of associating
with others who share interest and pride in the profession
in which we work.
The local chapter called Marin County Legal Secretaries Association
(MCLSA) holds dinner meetings on the second Thursday of each
month which feature educational speakers. The yearly dues
are just $35. There is an email link to MCLSA on the LSI website
www.lsi.org.
Please contact us for further information and location of
our next meeting.
